Dojang Rules
Dojang Rules
What is a Dojang?
The Dojang is the training hall in which Taekwondists train. It may not always be a purpose built area: a sports hall, basketball court, even a patch of grass; all these are considered dojang for the duration that taekwondo is taught there.
Here are rules that Taekwondists should ALWAYS follow whilst in the Dojang:
Bowing
- We bow to show respect to our instructors, fellow students and the art of Taekwondo
- Bow when entering and leaving the dojang
- Bow upon the command of 'kyong ye' from your instructor
- Bow to your instructor when addressed or called up in class
- Always return a bow from another student
Dobok (Uniform) and Appearance
- Your dobok must be clean and tidy; preferably ironed
- Graded students must wear full dobok and dhi (belt) during training. If you are out of uniform, line up behind 10th kup (back of the class)
- Do not wear outdoor shoes in the dojang
- If your belt comes undone, take the time to retie your belt. Do not discard it
General Taekwondo Etiquette
- Conduct yourself in a controlled and respectful manner in the dojang
- Show respect and compassion to everyone
- If you are training with a junior student, help and encourage them but do not show off
- Never use Taekwondo in an angry or arrogant manner. Keep your temper and show control at all times
- Enjoy training, show spirit and make the most of your time in the dojang: Taekwondo should always be a pleasure to practise!
- All taekwondo students and instructors are expected to adhere to the Tenets and Oath of Taekwondo (see below)
The Tenets Of Taekwondo
- Courtesy
- Integrity
- Perseverence
- Self-control
- Indomitable Spirit
The Oath of Taekwondo
- I shall observe the Tenets
- I shall respect the instructors and seniors
- I shall never misuse taekwondo
- I shall be a champion of freedom and justice
- I shall help to build a more peaceful world
Etiquette Towards Sabom (Instructors)
- Address instructors in the dojang as “Sir” or “Ma’am” (in Korean: sabom for instructors, sabom-nim for Masters and kwang jang-nim for Grandmasters)
- If you are late, go the instructor teaching the class, bow and ask permission to join the class. Do not just join in
- While in the class do not face the instructor whilst adjusting your clothing: face the back of the class
- If you need to sit down or leave the class, ask the instructor’s permission
- If you wish to ask a question during class, raise your hand and wait for your instructor. They will be happy to answer your questions
Health & Safety
- Report injuries, of any kind, to the instructor or secretary at the end of a session
- Make sure that your toe and finger nails are short and that your feet are clean
- Do not wear any jewellery when training. If there is jewellery that you are unable to take off for any reason, it must be securely taped down, so as not to present any kind of risk
- No food in the dojang (drinks are permitted)
- Unless told otherwise, never train in the dojang without the supervision of an instructor
- Push yourself, but show control and correct technique and you will not injure yourself. Train within your ability: your ability will improve with training.
