Committee Roles

In June each year, the club holds elections to decide its new committee for the forthcoming academic year. In order to do this, we need as many of you to nominate yourselves as candidates as possible. There are several positions available, with a greater or lesser degree of time and responsibility required of each one. The roles and responsibilities of each position are listed below:

Captain

The Captain is expected to chair the committee and to be the voice of the club to the University and the AU. They are required to organise, plan and chair regular meetings of the committee and instructors, preparing for all events from weekly training to gradings to the organisation of the Birmingham Uni Tournament. It is the Captain's role to evenly delegate tasks to other committee members based on their roles and to be aware of all aspects of the running of the club. They will also assist other members of the committee when their roles require further attention, and be the link between the instructors and the club/committee.

Vice-Captain

The Vice-Captain assists the Captain in all their roles and responsibilities, standing in for the Captain during absence, illness or sudden death! The Vice-Captain is also expected to be aware of all the club's affairs and have a good working relationship with the Captain in particular. They are also required to look after all equipment for the club and its individual members: assessing need for, ordering, receiving and distributing any kit and co-ordinating the financial side with the Treasurer. Finally they are expected to act as the senior grade representative for the club.

Secretary

The secretary is the organiser of the club. They are responsible for taking minutes in meetings, distributing them and retaining that information. They are responsible, along with the Captain, for ensuring the club members know of club events and for recording the members' needs for the committee to deal with. This includes: club membership, insurance, gradings, competitions, transport to and from events, etc, etc. It is also the role of the Secretary to organise training halls with AU, liaising with the Treasurer over costs.

Treasurer

The treasurer is responsible for all financial aspects of the club and should be involved in every financial transaction associated with the club.

These duties include:

  • ensuring the club does not go into debt; that membership is adequate to fund the budget
  • informing the committee regularly of the financial situation
  • keeping a record incoming/outgoing money in the AU and Guild accounts and petty cash
  • ensuring instructors are paid
  • costing the Birmingham Uni Competition
  • finding new sponsors and negotiating financial deals with them
  • preparation of a budget with the Captain for the following year

Club Administrator

The Administrator is essentially another pair of hands, helping with whatever is necessary or what other committee members may need assistance with. This year the Admin has also written various articles for Redbrick, AU newsletter, local press etc and has helped to organise events such as Fresher's week.

Social/Media Rep

Responsible for the fun side of the club!  Primary role will be to organise social activities based on the requests of current club members.  Other roles include the production of fliers, posters etc for notices and being an initial contact for freshers in the first semester.

Webmaster

Solely responsible for maintaining the club website, keeping it up-to-date with club news and forthcoming events, and making sure photos, vids etc are used to the best of their abilities. Other responsibilities include maintenance of the email lists and use of other methods of information and communication, eg Facebook.

Please note that to maintain the content of the site requires only basic knowledge of the internet. You will be responsible for making sure the invoices of both the domain name and web hosting are paid on time.

Social/Junior-Grade Reps (currently Avneet Chana)

Traditionally junior grades themselves with a year's experience of the club, the SJG Reps organise and publicise the club's socials and form a vital link between new members and the instructors and committee.

Candidates should be friendly and outgoing - and up for a good night out!

Please feel free to ask the current committee more about their roles and responsibilities.
